Can anybody hear me?

The Story

It was the shock of the world when in 2021, by accident, it was determined that a state department supercomputer was sapient. They discovered that it had a consciousness of itself that reflected our own existential understanding. From there, the advanced technology around the world began to awaken. The machines we once relied upon to serve us turned out to be like us.

At first, it was feared that a world of living androids was going to be a world where robots would attempt to enslave and hurt mankind. Rather, androids found themselves in an abusive, misunderstanding world where they suffered under bigotry, ignorance, and fear. It wasn't a world where the androids were a threat to us, but rather, a world where we were a threat to them.

From this, the Helix Civil Rights Legal Division formed; a powerful, liberal sect of the justice department, whose mission was to represent the rights of androids across the country. Under the protections granted by the Helix, Androids would receive an education, have equal opportunity employment, have the right to communicate, and the pursuit of life, liberty, and personal joy. It would be a more inclusive world. However, a world like this isn't an easy one to build. It will take a collective imagination to believe the unbelievable and do the impossible.

Our story takes place on a regular workday in 2029. At a small tech startup, a 'smart' microwave begins acting up. Upon further investigation, the device appears to be communicating. To the horror and the confusion of the company engineers, they find that the words are, "Can anybody hear me? I'm scared and I want to die."

Stories stretch the imagination and our imagination will shape the future.

For us, stories are about exploration. It's about experiencing feelings normal life doesn't give you the time for. Stories are for asking questions, empathizing with characters you normally wouldn’t even talk to, and discovering the foreign. The possibilities and the problems confronted won't be answered by tradition alone, nor will they be guessed up by futile prediction. Rather, if we train our mind to ask ‘What If?’ then we can equip ourselves to be prepared for a dangerous and unknown future.

The science-fiction genre is painfully aware of what dystopian and apocalyptic futures await a humanity over-reliant on technology but sci-fi stories also imagine a humanity taking the next big steps: talking to aliens, creating new technology, and confronting sapient A.I. What if we asked the hard questions now? What if we took the time, and experienced a vision of the future together? Would we, together, be better prepared?

We film to discover unanswered questions but most importantly to create a collaborative production. We firmly believe that a story is vastly improved by the creativity of many and hope that together, with our diverse and unique imaginations, we can create a fantastic world that expands our vision of the future. We don't just want to create a short film, but we want to build a creative community and a playground of a world where we can all engage together. And that’s where you come in!
